KINDERGARTEN

After lunch, Kindergarteners join together to work on more complicated and long-term projects. Our Kindergarten program includes weekly journaling, work in language and arithmetic, Our Place in the Universe, Seasonal Exploration, Science Experiments, an opportunity to employ the Scientific Method in our annual Science Fair, New England, Biomes, the Human Body, the Solar System, Our Earth, National Parks, and the Animal Kingdom. The following is a sampling of the qualities, developmental milestones, and academic achievements we foster in the Kindergarten Program:

Kindergarten Goals (Third-Year Children)

Language Skills

  1. Demonstrates good listening comprehension.

  2. Has developed a strong foundation in phonics and letter recognition.

  3. Utilizes whole language strategies of predicting, using illustrations, and whole word recognition.

  4. Decodes and isolates beginning, middle, and ending sounds as they become emergent readers.

  5. Has developed an appreciation of literature.

  6. Demonstrates beginning developmental spelling skills.

  7. Demonstrates the ability to create a story with characters and a plot that has a beginning, middle, and an end.

Handwriting

  1. Has established hand dominance.

  2. Has developed a strong and proper pencil grip.

  3. Demonstrates ability to write first name using upper case and lower case letters.

  4. Has begun to form letters of consistent height and form.

Mathematical Skills

  1. Demonstrates ability to count to 100.

  2. Demonstrates ability to recognize numbers 1-100 in sequence.

  3. Demonstrates ability to compose and recognize 2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit numbers. 

  4. Demonstrates working knowledge of the decimal system.

  5. Demonstrates understanding of the static addition process, multiplication, subtraction, and division.

  6. Demonstrates a burgeoning understanding of time, money, fractions, estimating, and graphing.     

Work Skills

  1. Concentrates on a chosen task and follows it through to completion.

  2. Chooses work independently.

  3. Works alone as well as cooperatively as a group member.

  4. Takes directions and follows them through.

  5. Demonstrates well-developed listening skills.

  6. Organizes oneself and one’s activity.

Social Skills

  1. Shows care, kindness, and consideration for others.

  2. Listens to others and expresses self clearly and effectively.

  3. Appreciates the similarities and differences of others.

  4. Demonstrates patience and cooperates as a group member.
